5 Summer Pre-apprenticeship Students

by laurel on June 15th, 2011 at 7:25 am
Posted In: Pre-apprenticeship program

We started our summer program last week with 5 very motivated bright young people, plus one 14 year old who wants to start his own lawn mowing company. He's too young for the pre-apprenticeship program, but we will be matching him up with some mentors.

Last week they went through the orientation sessions and completed career assessments. This week they will be volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, learning interviewing skills, and starting to put together goals and objectives to obtain their career goals.

Thanks John Cockerile, Sterling Henton, Gary Emerson , Annette Gomberg, Jeffery and other board members who made contributions to help with this event.
The clean up was made possible by Keep Knoxville Beautiful, for their contribution of trash bags, and pickup sticks and gloves and bottled water.  The city of Knoxville donated 6 large Trash cans as well as more gloves and pick up sticks. Dennis Satnik AKA Dumpster Daddy , from TN waste removal services donated a large  dumpster, Waste connections gave us 15 card board recycling boxes. Knoxville recycling coalition and project 2000 were in representation with materials about recycling and waste removal.
City council elect Michael mcBath helped out. County mayor Tim Burchette and his communications director Michael Grideralso  made an appearance. Thanks to them for their involvement with initial and ongoing media contact.
Thanks to all our media contacts. Green the Block  was featured on the community calendar for Knoxville sports and tourism corporation, was included in the Neighborhood advisory council newsletter, and  circulated on Community television (ctv) from the day before til the day after the event.
Seeed was interviewed on knox ivi, WBIR, WVLT, The HHH moninhg show, The Wutk morning show with Eva Posner and open dialogue on CTV. There was even several announcements made on Carpetbag theatre’s black box radio, and on a CTV episode of a show called “Gene TV.
Kids from the Literacy imperative center, and a group called Eli’s escape came out to help.  Neighborhood residents came out of their homes early on Saturday morning.  Store owner’s came outside to clean in front of their stores.
Parkridge residents and seeed volunteers did work in two nearby community gardens.  Beardsley community farm loaned out gardening tools.
Overall we collected more than 40 thirty gallon bags of trash and materials to be recycled.
